Business Development Director

Salary: Up to £85,000

Location: Home Based – Travel when required

Performance Related Uncapped Bonus.

Pareto are currently looking for a Business Development Director to join us on a full time permanent basis. We are looking for someone who is exceptional, the very best. Someone who is going to change the FM industry forever. Mediocrity need not apply.

Within this role you will report into the Managing Director and have responsibility for defining, developing and delivering the business’s development strategy in line with the Board objectives.

Working closely with the Managing Director, this strategically thinking professional will be responsible for helping to drive new business growth, through effective articulation of our service proposition and assist in the successful retention of customer accounts through focused, targeted retention strategies.

The role-holder will be a confident and vibrant presenter, capable of engaging at a senior level, demonstrating my clients capabilities and value add; constantly seeking solutions to customer challenges, and offering 'out the box' solutions

Role Responsibilities

  • Entire ownership of the business development function
  • Board level accountability for business growth
  • Handover successful contracts to Operations
  • Responsible for the BDM team in supporting their activities through prospecting, tendering and project work activities.
  • Responsible for generating new FM leads, developing client relationships and the subsequent preparation and delivery of both pre-qualification and tender documents.
  • Meeting agreed sales targets, exploiting opportunities for new business in defined market sectors and negotiating contracts on behalf of the Company with maximum possible margins.
  • Identify and exploit opportunities in existing business through introductions from existing Regional Divisional Management
  • Identify "Top" targets as agreed with the Managing Director as basis of targeting process.
  • Undertake re-tender activity for existing business as required by the Business Development Director including preparation of FM tender documentation in conjunction with operational team.
  • Negotiate contracts on behalf of the Company
  • Liaise and work with the functional department teams in the co-ordination of contract bids including specification development and pricing solutions
  • Provide support in the development of the sales database and maintain data accurately
  • Provide market intelligence where possible and monitor competitor activity, in defined market sectors.
  • Ensure full understanding of any changes and development in legislation and working practices that may affect the company's operations 
  • Maintain the highest standards of presentation, personal integrity and customer support
  • Provide statistics and reports as required to the highest accuracy.
  • Screen potential business opportunities by analysing market strategies, customer requirements, potential, and financials; evaluating options; resolving internal priorities.
  • Develop negotiating strategies and positions by studying integration of new venture with company strategies and operations; examining risks and potentials; estimating partners' needs and goals.
  • Close new business deals by coordinating requirements; develop and negotiate contracts; integrate contract requirements with business operations.
  • Protect organisation's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organisations.
  • Enhance organisation’s reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; explore opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Create tender documents and contract bid plans; identify risks such as TUPE, Penalties & Pensions.
  • Work to agreed sales targets, KPI’s, objectives and client timelines.
  • Deliver all aspects of the tender process, from Pipeline Generation to client presentations, final negotiations and contract signing.
  • Log all conversations/actions performed on CRM database
  • Keep online diary up to date and accurate
  • Handover successful contracts to Operations


  • Prior experience of generating business within a ‘TFM’ environment
  • Proven experience of delivering client presentations at various levels
  • Sales experience within the FM service sector
  • Experience of working within a target-driven environment
  • Prospecting, Sales Planning and Closing skills
  • Exercise initiative and creativity in meeting the sales targets, and generate opportunities.
